In this lecturewe introduce the basic knowledge and current research status of low dimensional (2D, 1D and 0D) materials that potentially could be used in the next generation electronic devices. There are three sections in this lecture. In the first section, the structure and electronics structure properties of the low dimensional materials are discussed, taking carbon materials as the example. Then, two synthesis methods for these materials, i.e. chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) are discussed in detail. In this section, the ultra high vacuum (UHV) technology, which is the foundation of MBE, is also introduced. In the last section, we discuss two very important characterization method of low dimensional materials, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning probe microscopy (SPM). The mechanism, equipment system and application examples are given. After the main section of the lecture, there are two questions as the homework and a recommended further study references list.
